Brewers Not Pursuing Lowe

By Bryan • Jan 6th, 2009 • Category: Milwaukee Brewers

GM Doug Melvin put an end to rumors of the Brewers having interest in Derek Lowe. Lowe was one of the few free agents that was interested in coming to Milwaukee to play. If you ask me this is another poor move by the Brewers in the off-season. Milwaukee does an amazing job getting talent in the farm system, but ends up trading them away for players that become hacks or don’t stay for more than a meager half-season.

The Brewers have also shown interest in Braden Looper, which was downplayed by Melvin saying we most likely would not land the deal. The other top starters on the market are Oliver Perez and Jon Garland, both who are not on the Brewers radar. The Brewers might have a chance at resigning Ben Sheets.

I personally think the Brewers need to get a starting rotation soon. The free agent market sucked this year and the Brewers put all their eggs in one basket and upset the only “star” pitcher they have, forcing him to free agency. If the Brewers lose both CC Sabathia and Sheets due to being tied up in negotiations and don’t sign some promising pitchers in the off-season, which is looking more probable by the day, the Brewers are going to be fighting with the Pirates and Reds for last place in the division.
